Statement

Working with poured paint I’m fascinated by the way household gloss forms a skin and remains wet underneath; once the skin is formed and air doesn’t reach the paint below it stays viscous forever.

Through playful experimentation I have discovered that paint acts in mysterious ways; filling volumes with different types of gloss paint produces a range of intriguing results, some form a perfect smooth skin, others wrinkle on top or old separated paint can produce the most remarkable ripples of colour under the surface of the skin.

By taking my practise is a sculptural direction I have been able to harness this experimentation on a larger scale creating large pools of glossy, seductive colour.

The suspended sculptures I am creating for the Fishmarket are a response to the space; the weight bearing beams scream to be used with the vast open spaces that the building offers.  By using sheet plastic as a support for a pool of paint, suspended from above I hope to exploit every aspect of the substance.  Not only the visual; fake, manufactured, smooth and vibrant but the physical weight and visceral qualities.
